The National Population Screening Programme for Breast Cancer is offered to all women aged 45-74 years residing permanently in Cyprus
The mammography is offered to all women aged 45-74 years old, free of charge, with their participation to be repeated every two years. Their participation to the Programme is based on data obtained from the Health Insurance Organisation, after a given permission by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner. Permanent residents in Cyprus who are not beneficiaries of the National Healthcare System or haven’t been registered to it yet, but comply with the age criterion of the programme, can participate to it on their own initiative.
Preventive screening with the use of mammogram supports the detection of breast cancer at an early stage. The mammogram can detect cancer, about three to four years before the symptoms are observed by the woman herself. Therefore, when cancer is detected early, there is a higher possibility of securing a positive outcome and a less aggressive treatment.
Appointments are arranged by calling the Mammography Center of respective district of residence, from Monday to Friday, between 7:30a.m. – 2:30p.m., mentioning to the program’s officer whether a mammogram has been done during the last two (2) years, either in the framework of the current Programme or privately.
When attending the mammogram examination, the beneficiaries of the Programme should have available their ID card or any other personal identification documents, as well as the results (CDs or films) of previous mammograms or other breast examinations.
