Cyprus to Assume EU Council Presidency in 2026

The Republic of Cyprus will assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026, for the second time, fourteen years after the first in 2012.
During this six-month period, the presiding member state chairs meetings in all configurations of the EU Council, ensuring the continuity and consistency of the Council’s work and legislative activities.
Role of the Presiding Member State
The member state presiding over the EU Council ensures the following:
- Continuation of the EU’s work (agenda)
- Production of sound legislative work
- Cooperation among member states
- Cooperation and coordination among European institutions
- Representation of the EU Council in European Parliament sessions
- Coordination of the Union’s positions in international organizations
