The Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr Alexis Vafeades, held a press conference with the Ambassador of the Netherlands, Ms Elke Merks-Schaapveld, on the event “Cycling in the city 2023”.

The event, which is an initiative of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Cyprus, will be held for the second consecutive year with the support of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works on Sunday, 14th of May. The message of the event summarises the points of convergence of the strategy of the two institutions, as far as the essential conversion of the citizen to sustainable means of transport is concerned, and specifically to active urban cycling and micromobility.

The Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr Alexis Vafeadis, said that “Cycling will make a decisive contribution to alleviating the traffic problem and will ensure accessibility and mobility for all citizens, giving equal opportunities for alternative transportation to those who wish to move economically and with a means that has been proven to have a beneficial effect on health and psychology. We invite the citizens to embrace the event and participate with us. Our wish is that “Cycling in the city” becomes an institution thus contributing to the promotion of the use of the bicycle”.

The Ambassador of the Netherlands, Ms Elke Merks-Schaapveld, said that “The green transition is high on the Dutch Foreign Ministry’s agenda. We want to see our EU partners working together towards this goal. Hence, this is an area where we have a growing cooperation with the Cypriot authorities. In the early 2010s, the Dutch Embassy had funded Dutch experts to outline a complete system of bicycle paths for specific areas in Cyprus. Now we are pleased to join forces together with the Cyprus Transport Ministry, and other Cypriot stakeholders to help raise awareness about the benefits of cycling, and part of this effort is this exciting bike ride of Nicosia”.

The bike ride includes cycling from Point A, Traffic Training Park of Δήμος Αγλαντζιάς – Aglantzia Municipality at 09:00, to Point B, Archbishop Makariou Avenue 3, Nicosia and return to the starting point.
