It is with great pleasure and a deep sense of purpose that I welcome you to today’s event, “Europe’s Environment 2025,” organised on the occasion of the Country Visit of the Executive Director of the European Environment Agency to Cyprus.

As we approach the final stretch towards assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), we stand before an exciting and defining moment – one that brings both opportunity and responsibility. This milestone reflects months of diligent preparation and reaffirms our commitment to contributing actively to Europe’s common vision for sustainability and resilience.

We are fortunate to have steadfast and capable partners by our side. The European Environment Agency’s scientific expertise and policy insight, are invaluable assets in supporting our upcoming Presidency, as we work together to advance the EU’s ambitious environmental and climate agenda. At a time when geopolitics, competitiveness, and sustainability increasingly intersect, our collaboration gains even greater importance in shaping the Europe we want for future generations.

However, for us the vision is clear. We cannot afford to waver in our long-term commitment to a sustainable and resilient future. Environmental degradation and impacts from climate change remain defining challenges of our time. They demand unity of purpose and immediate, coordinated action. Europe, and Cyprus in particular, face the consequences of unprecedented climatic and environmental pressures. It is our shared duty to respond decisively, guided by the principles of solidarity, innovation, and ambition.

Through the European Green Deal and the 8th Environment Action Programme, the EU has set high ambition for environmental action. Our collective efforts to translate these commitments into concrete, effective measures are reflected in the EU’s core values, aspirations and priorities.

In this context, the European Environment Agency’s flagship report, “Europe’s Environment 2025,” assumes particular significance. It represents the most comprehensive and science-based assessment of Europe’s environmental state and future outlook, drawing upon the expertise of 38 European countries. It stands as a testament to Europe’s collective determination to confront climate change and environmental degradation through evidence-based policy and common purpose.

The Report’s findings reveal that, although Europe has achieved significant progress in lowering emissions and improving air quality, our environment continues to face immense pressure. The ongoing loss of biodiversity, the escalating effects of climate change, and the unsustainable use of natural resources threaten not only our quality of life but also our economic strength. Reaching climate neutrality by 2050, will demand an even greater commitment to decarbonisation, responsible consumption, and the restoration of our natural ecosystems. I am especially pleased to share that, only a few hours ago, Environment Ministers from across Europe reached an agreement on the compromise text for the 2040 Climate Law. This milestone enables us to advance more effectively toward the goal of climate neutrality. This agreement is a testament to our collective determination to create a more sustainable and resilient Europe for future generations.

Cyprus, for its part, has demonstrated tangible progress in the field of sustainability – expanding protected areas under the Natura 2000 network, increasing the share of renewable energy, and improving air quality. Yet, challenges persist. Dependence on fossil fuels, waste management, and desertification continue to challenge our resilience. Addressing these issues calls for continued investment in green energy, circular economy practices, and sustainable land and water management to ensure that Cyprus contributes meaningfully to the European green transition.

Before concluding, I wish to extend my sincere thanks to you, Leena, for accepting my invitation, as well as for your leadership in promoting Europe’s environmental vision. I look forward to your presentation and to the valuable insights you will share on Europe’s Environment 2025.

Leena, the floor is yours.

Thank you.
