I am truly delighted to join the celebrations on the occasion of the 76th anniversary of the Proclamation of the People’s Republic of China.
Since its establishment, China has undergone a remarkable transformation – driven by vision and extraordinary resilience. Its impressive economic achievements, scientific progress, and technological advancement derive from the groundbreaking process that began in 1949.
Today, China stands as a major power with a decisive voice in global affairs. Its active role in international organisations and its contributions to sustainable development and conflict resolution echo its determined commitment towards a stable and prosperous world order.
At first glance, the geographical distance between Cyprus and China – one a small island in the Eastern Mediterranean, the other a vast landmass in Asia – might suggest limited connection. Yet our shared values and historical experiences tell a completely different story.
Cyprus and China have endured turbulent chapters in history. Through those hardships, we have come to embody the spirit of resilience and adaptability. At the same time, we are bound by a deep commitment, and deep and unshakeable respect for sovereignty and independence – principles resolutely forged through our respective struggles.
These parallel experiences have laid the foundation for a solid and time-tested friendship. And today, we take great pride in the depth of cooperation between our two countries.
At the bilateral level, our cooperation has gained huge momentum. Trade and investment have expanded, unlocking new opportunities for businesses and employment. Cultural and academic partnerships have deepened mutual understanding and built bridges between our younger generations. Tourism continues to thrive, while collaboration in key areas such as shipping, renewable energy, and digital technology holds great promise for the future.
At the same time, Cyprus and China continue to broaden their cooperation within the United Nations (UN) framework and other international organisations, as fervent advocates of multilateralism, which is the most effective instrument to foster meaningful engagement and to tackle today’s crises. Our collaboration also extends to a range of global initiatives, including the pursuit of sustainable development and the provision of humanitarian assistance.
These principles not only strengthen but also define our relations with China. Amid geopolitical turmoil, they have become ever more vital – a compass to our joint efforts to uphold peace and international stability.
Allow me, at this point, to extend our sincere gratitude for China’s unwavering support to the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus. We deeply value China’s principled position on the Cyprus problem, including in its capacity as a Permanent Member of the UN Security Council, towards our efforts to resume negotiations for a viable and lasting settlement, firmly anchored on the agreed UN framework.
At the same time, Cyprus’ commitment to the One China Policy remains a basic principle of our foreign policy.
We are also determined to actively support the enhancement of European Union (EU)-China relations. In this context, the forthcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU, the great national mission that Cyprus is ready and proud to undertake in less than four months, offers a vital opportunity to promote dialogue and constructive cooperation.
In this regard, we will build on the positive momentum, including the joint statement on climate of the 25th EU-China summit held last July, marking the 50th anniversary since the establishment of EU-China diplomatic relations.
It is my firm conviction that in the years to come, the Republic of Cyprus and the People’s Republic of China will further consolidate their cooperation, elevating our partnership to ever greater heights.
In this spirit, I raise my glass to the good health of President Xi Jinping, to the continued prosperity of the Chinese people, and, of course, to the enduring friendship between our two countries.
