Address by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, at the 24th International Pharos Chamber Music Festival

From:

  • Deputy Ministry of Culture
01/06/25 20:35  |  Speech / Address  |  President of the Republic / Presidency, Culture

The address was conveyed by the Deputy Minister of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus, Dr Vasiliki Kassianidou

It is with great pleasure that I join you today here at the Olive Grove in Delikipos, representing the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, and delivering his address at the closing concert of the 24th International Pharos Chamber Music Festival.

As in previous years, the festival has brought to Cyprus some of the world’s top soloists, who over the last few days have offered remarkable performances.

The International Pharos Chamber Music Festival has contributed greatly to the classical music scene of the island. Over the last twenty-four years, dozens of artists of international reputation and prestige have been hosted by the festival and have performed musical works with masterful skills, offering the audience truly unique experiences.

The annual cultural event has steadily and solidly gained an unequalled reputation for the quality of its concerts, as well as its enchanting atmosphere and settings. It is not surprising that it is so popular among all those who cherish classical music.

A special note should be made regarding the fact that the festival has succeeded to place Cyprus on the world map of classical music scene, and to attract audiences from a wide range of countries who visit our island specifically in order to attend the festival’s concerts. I would therefore like to thank the Pharos Foundation for its pioneering contribution to our efforts to develop cultural tourism to Cyprus.

The fact that the greatest part of the festival usually takes place at the Royal Manor House in Kouklia – one of the finest surviving monuments of Frankish architecture in Cyprus and part of one of our UNESCO World Heritage sites – has a dual significance for the Government. Firstly, it unequivocally contributes to the realisation of the goal set by the Deputy Ministry of Culture for high level cultural to events to be organised all over the island and not only in the main urban centres, so that local communities can have access and profit from them. Secondly, it implements our strategic goal of shining a light to our monuments and attracting new visitors through cultural events such as this one.

Additionally, I would like to highlight another important fact about this evening. For tonight’s concert, the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra has been invited to collaborate with the festival’s soloists for the second time. The Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra will perform alongside four of the festival’s soloists – pianist Nikita Mndoyants and violinists Boris Brovtsyn, Svetlin Roussev, and Diemut Poppen, along with Ela Kallidou, Concertmaster of the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Yiorgos Kountouris. This collaboration provides a unique opportunity to our aspiring young musicians to work with such world-renowned performers; an experience I am sure they will never forget.

It is for all these reasons that the Deputy Ministry of Culture supports the festival via the funding programme “Kypria” of the Department of Contemporary Culture.

In closing, I would like to thank and congratulate the Pharos Foundation for this festival and for its overall contribution to the classical music of our country.

Now it is time to enjoy the magic of music!
