Announcement by the Shipping Deputy Ministry on Cyprus hosting the European Maritime Day 2026
From:
The official handover ceremony for hosting the European Maritime Day (EMD) 2026 took place yesterday, 23 May 2025, in Cork, Ireland, during the closing ceremony of this year’s celebrations, in the presence of the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Mr Costas Kadis. Cyprus was represented by the Mayor of Lemesos and officials from the Shipping Deputy Ministry.
The Republic of Cyprus will host the EMD 2026 on 21 and 22 May 2026, in the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU). Lemesos will be at the heart of the celebrations, while parallel events will also be held in other coastal towns across Cyprus.
The coordination of the event has been undertaken by the Deputy Ministry of Shipping in collaboration with other competent ministries, local authorities, and key stakeholders in the maritime and blue economy sectors.
European Maritime Day is the EU’s flagship annual event dedicated to the maritime and shipping community, as well as stakeholders involved in the blue economy. Cyprus, as an island nation with a long-standing maritime and shipping tradition, is proud to host the event in Lemesos – a city which exemplifies blue growth, innovation, and European cooperation.
EMD 2026 will provide an open and inclusive platform for dialogue, exchange of ideas, and the promotion of collective action towards the sustainable development of the blue economy. At the same time, it will serve as a celebration of Cyprus’ maritime and shipping community and its commitment to a sustainable future for Europe’s seas and oceans.
Preparations are already underway, in close collaboration with the European Commission, aiming towards a successful event which will highlight Cyprus’ maritime identity and European vision.
