Repatriation of human remains

For the arrival of human remains in Cyprus for burial, private arrangements should be made with licensed funeral homes, both in the country of departure of the remains, as well as in Cyprus.

For the arrival of human remains of a Cypriot citizen in Cyprus for burial, the following actions should be taken:

  1. Contact with the local Diplomatic Mission of the Republic of Cyprus for relevant guidance.
  2. Private arrangements of the family with licensed funeral homes, both in the country of departure of the body, as well as in Cyprus.
  3. Submission by the local funeral home to the Diplomatic Mission of the Republic of Cyprus of the necessary supporting documents for the transfer of the body for burial in Cyprus. The above will be forwarded by the Diplomatic Mission of the Republic of Cyprus to the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Transport.

To transport the human remains of a foreigner from Cyprus for burial abroad, the following steps should be taken:

  1. Contact with the local Diplomatic Mission of the deceased's country of origin for relevant guidance.
  2. Private arrangements of the family with licensed funeral homes, both in the country of transfer of the remains, as well as in Cyprus.

For licensed funeral homes in the country, where the remains are to be transferred, it is necessary to contact the local Diplomatic Mission of the deceased's country of origin or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country.

  1. Submission by the funeral home to the local Diplomatic Mission of the deceased's country of origin of the necessary supporting documents for the transfer of the remains for burial in the foreign country.

Transfer of cremains

If the body has been cremated, then an Apostille-certified cremation certificate must be presented in place of the embalming certificate. The transporter of the ashes is obliged to take all measures for their safe packaging. Upon arrival in the Republic of Cyprus, they must additionally present a properly certified death certificate of the deceased.
