Innovative multilingual support services leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) were presented today at the event “Empowering Europe with AI: The European Commission AI-based Multilingual Services”, co-organised by the Press and Information Office of the Republic of Cyprus (PIO) and the Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) of the European Commission (EC), at the Presidential Palace.
Addressing the event, the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of the Republic of Cyprus, Dr Nicodemos Damianou, highlighted the ascendancy of AI on the global agenda. He also described AI as “a transformative force that is reshaping the economy, governance, and society itself”.
In her address, the Director of the PIO, Ms Aliki Stylianou, spoke about the importance of translation and multilingualism, noting that “since 1990, we [the PIO] have been the competent authority in Cyprus for official translations”. She also emphasised that AI is not merely a tool, but an “accelerator of administrative efficiency”.
On his part, the Director-General of the DGT, Mr Christos Ellinides, presented the political framework for implementing AI in Europe and outlined the AI-based applications within the DGT. He emphasised the goal of creating an AI-driven continent – one free from dependencies, grounded in robust infrastructure, and ensuring equal representation of all languages.
The Head of Sector for AI Innovation, Mr Cristian Brasoveanu, and the AI-Based Multilingual Services Advisor, Ms Kristiina Suviste, presented examples of the available AI-based multilingual digital tools across various sectors. These tools are intended for use by, inter alia, European Union (EU) staff members, public and non-governmental organisations, and academics – provided they are located in an EU country or a country participating in a Digital Europe programme. The multilingual digital tools have been created with security and privacy as priorities; user data is processed in a secure environment and deleted without being shared with third parties. As with all AI-generated results, the accuracy of any output generated through these tools requires verification.
