The President of the Republic, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, received today, at the Presidential Palace, the Minister for Europe of the United Kingdom, Mr Leo Doherty.

Following his meeting with the President of the Republic, the Minister for Europe of the United Kingdom, Mr Leo Doherty, in statements to the press said, inter alia: “I had a really positive conversation with the President, talking about a wide range of very important Anglo-Cyprus issues. We had a good conversation about the recent coronation of our King and of course we were honoured to have the President attend. I know he found it very very special. And I think it was a reminder of the very unique, strong bond between Great Britain and Cyprus and the huge Cypriot community in London and other cities and the very very close connections that we enjoy today. And of course, we must not forget that there are many Brits living here in Cyprus enjoying your fine weather and more than a million come on holiday every year”.

“Μy focus really here is ensuring that our relations are in good order. We continue to push forward on trade, tourism and education, and we had a very very satisfactory discussion with your President. I am honoured to be here and I’m grateful for the opportunity to speak to him”, Mr Doherty added.

Replying to a question about the recent developments in the Varoshia area, Mr Doherty said: “He (President Christodoulides) made some very encouraging statements about his desire to see a settlement, and for that process to continue. We entirely support his approach for a bicommunal bizonal federation. We think that’s the right approach. Of course, we have to see what comes in terms of the wider political context of the Turkish elections, but we would always advocate for a bizonal bicommunal federation among UN principles”.
