The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, who is paying an official visit to Latvia, the first ever official visit to the country by a Cypriot President, met today with the President of the Republic of Latvia, Mr Edgars Rinkēvičs, at the Riga Castle.

President Christodoulides arrived this morning at the Riga Castle, where he was welcomed by President Rinkēvičs. Then, the two Presidents had a tête-à-tête meeting, followed by meetings in an extended format.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus also signed the guest book of the Castle, in which he wrote the following:

“I am truly honoured to be in Riga today, upon the kind invitation from the President of the Republic, Mr Edgars Rinkēvičs, on the first ever official visit to the Republic of Latvia by a President of the Republic of Cyprus.

As two countries that have suffered – and, unfortunately, Cyprus still continues to suffer – from foreign occupation, Cyprus and Latvia have always been strong supporters of a rules-based international order and have placed the respect of international law at the forefront of their foreign policies.

Over the last 21 years, Latvia and Cyprus have enjoyed the benefits of their joint participation in the European Union (EU) family, a development which has further enriched our ties.

From January 2026 onwards, Latvia and Cyprus are expected to take on leading roles in the international arena, through Latvia’s historic first participation in the United Nations Security Council, and the assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the EU, first by Cyprus during the first half of 2026 and then by Latvia during the second half of 2028.

I am extremely grateful for the warm hospitality extended to myself and the members of my delegation, and I look forward to our discussions, which I am convinced that will further elevate the bilateral relations between Cyprus and Latvia to new heights.”
