The President of the Republic of Cyprus met with the President of the European Council

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, met today with the President of the European Council, Mr Antonio Costa, who is paying a working visit to Cyprus, at the Presidential Palace.
Welcoming President Costa, President Christodoulides said: “We are very glad to have you in Cyprus. We are looking forward to discussing the strategic agenda, the leaders’ agenda for 2026, and within this context, the importance of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU). We are ready to take on our responsibility. We have the traditional files of the EU, like the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), and we need to work on the issues of the cohesion policy, of the agriculture policy. At the same time, it should reflect our new priorities – competitiveness, security and defence, migration. So, I am looking forward to our discussion. At the same time, for us, as the member state of the EU in the region, it is very important to work with the countries of the region, to bring the countries of the region closer to the EU, as we have the same challenges and need to work with them.
I am looking forward to welcoming you many more times in Cyprus during our Presidency. I would like to say publicly that the fact that you are visiting all member states ahead of our European Council in October is very important and shows, at the same time, how you approach all member states of the EU, either small or big member states”.
On his part, President Costa said: “It is always a pleasure to visit you in Cyprus, dear Nikos. As you said, all member states matter. And it is very important to build unity among the members states, and to talk face-to-face with the different leaders, take into account all the different priorities, the different point of views, because only through working together, only by strengthening our unity, we can become stronger. And this year is very special, because you are preparing your Presidency in the first semester of 2026.
We count on you to put in motion our priorities: competitiveness, security, and engaging more with the region. The Middle East is a critical point for the world, and we need to work for peace, for stability, and for prosperity in the Mediterranean”.
After their private meeting, the two leaders had a working lunch, followed by statements to the media.
