The President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, received today, at the Presidential Palace, the credentials of the new US Ambassador to Cyprus, Ms. Julie D. Fisher.

During their meeting, President Anastasiades and Ambassador Fisher exchanged views on the excellent level of Cyprus-US bilateral relations, mainly in the fields of Security and Defense as well as Energy, which undoubtedly give new momentum to bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Subsequently, they reviewed the current situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the close cooperation between the US and the Republic of Cyprus to achieve conditions of peace and stability in the wider region.

President Anastasiades thanked the American Ambassador for the long-term support of the United States in our efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem, based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, within the framework of the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and the international law, despite Turkish insistence on promoting a two-state solution in Cyprus.

The President of the Republic expressed his special appreciation for the supportive position of the US, both as regards the illegal Turkish actions within the Cypriot EEZ, recognizing the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus to develop its natural resources within its maritime zones as they derive from international law, especially UNCLOS, as well as concerning Ankara’s efforts to impose new faits accomplis in the fenced-off area of Varosha.

Finally, President Anastasiades and Ambassador Fisher discussed the latest developments regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine, in light of the US President Joe Biden’s visit to Kyiv yesterday, expressing their undivided support for the sovereignty, the independence and the territorial integrity of Ukraine, but also the belief that diplomatic efforts aimed at ending hostilities – a year after the Russian invasion – must be intensified.
