The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Constantinos Kombos, had a meeting today, Monday 7 July 2025, with the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs of the Republic of Kenya, Dr Musalia Mudavadi, in the framework of his official visit in Kenya.

The two Ministers held a wide-ranging and in-depth exchange of views, with a focus on bilateral relations, including the areas of trade and economic activity. They agreed on the need for accelerated action, underlining that the current moment presents a window of opportunity that must be seized. The faster both countries act, they noted, the more tangible the benefits will be for their peoples.

Several sectors were highlighted as having strong potential for cooperation. These include the maritime industry, the financial technology sector, and tourism.

Mr Kombos noted preparations underway by the Republic of Cyprus in view of its Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) in the first half of 2026. He expressed Cyprus’ intention to use this role in a responsible and strategic manner, to highlight regions and countries that are natural partners of the EU.

The Minister expressed his sincere appreciation to the Government of Kenya for its long-standing and principled stance on the Cyprus issue, a position that has remained consistent over decades and dates back to the early years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Reflecting on the historical ties between Cyprus and Kenya, which predate even their independence, the Minister underlined the obligation to reinvigorate and build upon this relationship. He emphasised the need to accelerate joint efforts and cooperation for the benefit of both nations and their peoples.

On the margins of the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding on Political and Diplomatic Consultations was signed, laying the foundation for more structured and regular dialogue. In addition, the two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation at the institutional level and across specific sectors.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs thanked the Prime Cabinet Secretary for the warm hospitality extended to him and his delegation, expressing honour at being received in Kenya and extending an invitation to his counterpart for a visit in Cyprus, and conveyed a corresponding invitation from the President of the Republic, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, to the President of the Republic of Kenya, Mr William Ruto.
