Reference to the Cyprus problem during UN press briefing

In answer to questions about the activities in Cyprus of Mr Miroslav Jenča, the Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and Americas at the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, the Spokesman said Mr Jenča visited Cyprus from the 27th to the 29th August, as part of the UN’s continued engagement with the parties to explore common ground on the way forward on the Cyprus issue. He met separately with the Greek Cypriot leader, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Ersin Tatar, as well as their representatives. Recent developments on the ground and operational issues related to the mandate of UNFICYP (UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus) were also discussed. He also visited the sector four of the peacekeeping mission, meeting with UN peacekeepers, expressing his appreciation for their professionalism and dedicated service.

He also paid a visit to the Committee on Missing Persons. Mr. Jenča will now go on to Ankara for meetings with the authorities there on August 30th – September 1st.

Question: Thank you, Steph. First on Cyprus. You gave a long list of meetings. Was there any progress on the disputed road in the buffer zone that Turkish Cypriots were trying to build and does the Secretary-General have any plans to try and meet again with the Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders?

Spokesperson: We will keep you updated as to whatever meetings may happen on the sidelines of the GA. No updates on that situation as far as I’m aware.
