Announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the emergency financial assistance to the families of the victims of the terrorist attack in Damascus

Following a proposal by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, the Council of Ministers today, 25 June 2025, approved the provision of emergency financial assistance amounting to €50,000 to the families of the victims of the terrorist attack on 22 June 2025 at St Elias Church of the Greek Orthodox Community in the Dweila area of Damascus.

The financial assistance, which will be provided through the Patriarchate of Antioch, is intended, inter alia, to cover immediate and urgent needs, including medical care for the injured, psychological support, and contributing to the repair of damage to the Church.

During today’s telephone conversation between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Constantinos Kombos, and His Beatitude Patriarch Ioannis X of Antioch, the Minister reiterated Cyprus’ unwavering support and reiterated its unequivocal condemnation of the terrorist attack, which must be fully investigated by the Syrian authorities, who must also ensure the protection of the Christian population. Mr Kombos also briefed Patriarch Ioannis X on the decision of the Council of Ministers to provide the relevant financial assistance to the Patriarchate of Antioch.

The need to support the Christian population in Syria had previously also been underlined by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus at the recent European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs Council meeting held in Brussels on 23 June 2025.
