The Council of Europe and the Republic of Cyprus co-organize the Conference “Artificial Intelligence – Intelligent Politics: Challenges and Opportunities for Media and Democracy”

MINISTERIAL CONFERENCE 2021_cover

The Council of Europe (CoE) and the Republic of Cyprus, through the Press and Information Office (PIO), are co-organizing on 10-11 June 2021, in Lefkosia, the online Conference of Ministers responsible for the Media and Information Society of the Council of Europe titled “Artificial Intelligence – Intelligent Politics: Challenges and Opportunities for Media and Democracy”. The Conference is under the auspices of the President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, who will address participants, while the Minister of Interior, Mr Nicos Nouris, will chair it as host Minister. The Government Spokesman, Mr Kyriakos Koushos, will also address the Conference.

The Conference consists of four thematic areas:

  • The impacts of AI-powered technologies on freedom of expression
  • The changing environment in media and information
  • Taking action to ensure the safety of journalists
  • Resilience of freedom of expression protection networks in times of crisis.

Prominent personalities, including representatives of governments and European institutions, legal experts and academics will make presentations in the context of thematic discussions, which will conclude with the adoption of respective resolutions. The Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Mr Kokkinos, will present the first thematic resolution. The Conference will be concluded with the adoption of the “Nicosia Declaration”.

It is noted that all conference proceedings with the exception of the Ministerial Round Table (11 June) will be open to the public through live streaming. The relevant link will be provided on the Conference website.
