The Chief Returning Officer, Mr Kypros Kyprianou, replied to press questions
From:
The Chief Returning Officer, Mr Kypros Kyprianou, replying to a question posed by a journalist during the press briefing at 3 p.m., at the Press and Information Officer, on whether there had been complaints about the sending out of sms messages to citizens in violation of the electoral law, confirmed that such complaints had been made, adding that he communicated with the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection who said that 4-5 of such complaints had come to her attention.
As regards other complaints, Mr Kyprianou noted that more information had been requested both by the Commissioner’s Office and himself.
With regard to the voters’ personal data, which are being announced by the polling stations’ staff during the voting procedure, namely name/surname and number of the voter’s electoral booklet, the Chief Returning Officer said that this process is necessary in order to cross-check the voters’ data. He also cited the Personal Data Protection Commissioner’s position on the matter, who, as Mr Kyprianou pointed out, doesn’t find the matter reproachable.
