and the European Night of Museums 2025
The Department of Antiquities of the Deputy Ministry of Culture and the Cyprus National Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) announce that, within the framework of International Museum Day (18th May), under the theme “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities”, and the European Night of Museums, numerous events will be organised, most with free entrance.
The objective of International Museum Day, established by ICOM in 1977, is to increase public awareness on the role of museums in the development of society, to raise awareness of the fact that Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, education, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among people.
This year’s theme “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities” is highlighting the transformative role of museums in society. The museums will aim in focusing on how museums can navigate and contribute to a world undergoing profound social, technological, and environmental shifts. Museums are more than spaces of preservation ‒ they are active participants in shaping sustainable and inclusive communities.
Organised on and around the 18th of May each year, International Museum Day celebrations can last a day, a weekend, a whole week or a month. Participation in International Museum Day is growing internationally. In 2023, more than 37,000 museums participated in the event in about 158 countries and territories. In Cyprus, this year’s programme includes events organised by 20 Museums and other cultural institutions throughout the month of May.
The public can download the programme of events from the Department of Antiquities’ website and social media (Facebook and Instagram), as well as from the websites and social media platforms of the participating museums.
