Event “Harmonies and Healing” in the framework of the programme “Culture and Health”

The Department of Contemporary Culture of the Deputy Ministry of Culture, as part of its strategy for developing and promoting initiatives in the field of Public Health, and specifically through its programme “Culture and Health”, announces the event “Harmonies and Healing” on Tuesday, 25 February 2025, at the Theatrical Organisation of Cyprus (ThOC), at the Central Stage “Evis Gavrielides”, at 5:00pm.

The event is held in collaboration with the Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO and the Avantgarde Cultural Foundation.

The programme includes a piano performance by Steinway Artist Min-Jung Kym and a roundtable discussion on the positive impact of music on healing and psychosomatic well-being, featuring the following speakers:

  • Min-Jung Kym, Pianist, Steinway Artist
  • Gerrit Glaner, Cultural Advisor, former Concert & Artist Manager of Steinway & Sons
  • Dr Georg Hajdu, Musicologist-Researcher
  • Prof. Dr rer. nat. Dr med. Dr h.c. Nikolaos Zamboglou, Radiation Oncologist, CEO of the German Medical Institute
  • Dr Yiola Markou, Medical Oncologist, Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre
  • Dr Margarita Philippou, Specialist Physician, Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society and Arodafnousa Palliative Care Centre
  • Dr Margarita Alexomanolaki, Head of the Department of Performing Arts and Cinema at the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, Member of the Interministerial Working Group on Cultural Prescription

The discussion, to be conducted in English, will be moderated by Photini Pallikaridou, Public Awareness and Communications Officer of the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society.

This initiative is addressed to individuals interested in exploring the intersection of music and medicine, including healthcare professionals, musicians, cultural professionals, researchers, and anyone who values the power of the arts and culture in human life, broadening perspectives and fostering inspiration.

Prior to the event, as a parallel activity, at noon on the 25th of February, the Deputy Minister of Culture, Dr Vasiliki Kassianidou, with the pianist Min-Jung Kym will visit the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre. This visit will include interactions with patients and staff and a short piano performance by the artist.

Franco-British pianist Min-Jung Kym is a multifaceted artist renowned for her captivating performances and innovative approach to music. Engaging audiences worldwide, she has performed with leading orchestras and collaborated with eminent musicians, earning acclaim for her artistry and versatility. A passionate advocate for global music education, Min-Jung is deeply committed to ensuring music accessibility for all. As a Steinway Artist, she bridges the worlds of music, innovation and technology, particularly through her pioneering work with the Spirio piano, efforts which have garnered recognition from major corporations. Her book “Music to Help Overcome Cancer” chronicles her personal journey with cancer and the transformative power of music in the healing process.

As a prominent voice in music therapy and an inspiration on social media, Min-Jung continues to champion the role of music in bringing hope and resilience to others. In recounting her experiences, Min-Jung is regularly invited to write articles on the practices of music therapy and appears often as a motivational speaker worldwide.
