An important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Rome between Cyprus and Italy, marking a decisive step in the joint effort to combat clandestine excavations and the illicit trafficking of antiquities, while further strengthening cultural cooperation between the two countries.
During a bilateral meeting held at the Ministry of Culture of Italy, the Deputy Minister of Culture, Dr Vasiliki Kassianidou, and the Italian Minister of Culture, Mr Alessandro Giuli, reaffirmed their strong commitment to protecting cultural heritage through enhanced collaboration, technical training, and the exchange of expertise. Followingly, they signed a particularly significant MoU in addressing one of the most pressing challenges in the field of cultural heritage; Italy’s internationally recognised expertise in prevention, law enforcement, and heritage recovery is expected to offer valuable guidance as Cyprus intensifies its own efforts.
In the framework of their meeting, the two Ministers also discussed the role of culture during times of crisis, including measures to safeguard cultural heritage in situations of conflict and natural disasters. They also exchanged views on how to enhance the protection of archaeological sites through joint actions and best practices.
Dr Kassianidou also presented Cyprus’ cultural agenda and priorities in view of the European Union (EU) Presidency in 2026, emphasising the central role of culture in fostering international cooperation, resilience, and sustainable development.
