General Assembly of the European Mediterranean Regulators Group for Electronic Communications (EMERG) and Workshop on Strengthening Broadband Infrastructure and Services

TheEuropean Mediterranean Regulators Group for Electronic Communications (EMERG) held its general assembly on July 24th in Nicosia, under the Chairmanship of Mr. Petros Galides, Deputy Commissioner of Communications.

During the general assembly a review of EMERG’s activities for 2024 took place and actions and measures on various issues concerning the members were discussed. The Annual Report for 2023 and the Work Programme for 2024 were approved, along with the Action Document on EMERG’s International Cooperation with other bodies and organisations. A Compendium of Broadband Mapping Case Studies was also presented by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

On July 25th, as part of a series of workshops aimed at promoting broadband infrastructure mapping, EMERG, in collaboration with the ITU and the Eastern Partnership Electronic Communications Regulators Network (EaPeReg), organised the Workshop on “Strengthening Broadband Infrastructure and Services”. During the Workshop, software mapping tools were presented, with the aim of exchanging experiences and best practices and exploring new features that enhance the development and uses of broadband infrastructure and services for the benefit of society and the economy. Case studies from Cyprus, Albania, and Jordan were presented at the Workshop.

About EMERG

EMERG was founded on July 1st 2008 in Malta as an independent platform of National Regulatory Authorities of Mediterranean and European countries for electronic communications networks and services. The Μembers of EMERG are Albania, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Montenegro, Morocco, Palestine, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Syria, Tunisia, and Turkey. EMERG’s principles are inspired by the ideals and principles of Euro-Mediterranean Cooperation, as outlined in the Barcelona Declaration of November 28 1995, which establishes the principles of a partnership aimed at transforming the Mediterranean region into a common area of peace, stability and prosperity, through enhanced political dialogue and cooperation on security, economic, social, and cultural issues.
