Joint press release by the Ministry of Justice and Public Order and the Office of the Commissioner for Gender Equality

Cyprus supports and endorses the Roadmap for Women’s Rights, announced by the European Commission on this year’s International Women’s Day. The Roadmap demonstrates and reiterates the will and commitment of the European Union (EU) to promoting the principle of gender equality, as well as to strengthening women’s rights in all areas of life. It constitutes the European commitment to substantive equality, aiming at combating gender-based violence, high standards of health, equal pay and economic empowerment, work-life balance and balance in care, equal employment opportunities and decent working conditions, quality and inclusive education, political participation, and equal representation also in institutional mechanisms to ensure women’s rights.

Cyprus, which will assume the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026, taking over from the Trio countries, Poland and Denmark, declares its full and unequivocal support for this important European initiative, which is fully aligned with national policies and strategies for the promotion of gender equality. In the same context, it welcomes the start of efforts to form the new European Strategy for Gender Equality 2026-2030, acknowledging the significant progress made over the past five years.

Equality between women and men is a fundamental principle and a key component for competitiveness, democracy, and social justice. To this end, Cyprus declares its readiness to contribute substantially and constructively to every effort and initiative, which will lead to even greater achievements and conquests in the area of gender equality, 30 years after the adoption of the emblematic Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
