Today’s ENVI Council, the last under the Polish presidency, convenes here in Luxembourg with a rich agenda. Among the important topics on the agenda, three stand out for Cyprus in particular.
The first is the opening discussion on the Regulation on circularity for requirements for vehicle design and the management of End-of-Life Vehicles. Cyprus supports the Regulation, as it is a meaningful step towards circularity. It addresses pressing environmental and industrial challenges, and above all, it gives a clear message that Europe stands firmly committed to sustainability.
The second important topic on the agenda is the water resilience strategy; a very important topic for Cyprus. The strategy was very recently presented by the European Commission. It sets out a comprehensive action plan of more than 50 measures that help member states manage water resources more efficiently and ensure availability and quality for all. We welcome the focus on resilience and, of course, the proposed financial mechanisms that are essential to implement more sustainable and future-proof water management systems. Cyprus will work actively and constructively for the advancement of the water resilience strategy.
The third important topic on the agenda is the European Union’s (EU) Road to the Conference of the Parties to combat climate change in November 2025. We believe that Europe must have a clear message that supports compatible and ambitious European and national contributions that uphold the Paris Agreement, ensuring fair, inclusive, and science-based transition towards net zero, transparent climate finance, and most importantly, a balanced approach that aligns ambition with feasibility.
