Discussion about natural disasters, forest fires and fire protection of our forests
A meeting of the Department of Meteorology was held yesterday, Tuesday, 4 July 2023, under the Director of the Department, Dr. Kleanthis Nicolaides and the heads of the Department’s sections, with a delegation from the CERIDES Center of Excellence – Excellence in Innovation and Technology of the European University of Cyprus. The delegation was consisted of Mr Georgios Boustras, Professor of Risk Assessment at the European University of Cyprus and Special Adviser to the President of the Republic of Cyprus on Crisis Management and Civil Protection Issues, as well as a group of his colleagues at the CERIDES Center of Excellence, among whom were Mrs Cleo Varianou-Mikellidou, Mrs Maria-Thalia Christou, Mr Jason Senekkis, Mr Matthieu Jost and Mrs Judith Kirschner.
During the meeting, there was a discussion about natural disasters with emphasis on forest fires and the fire protection of our forests. The Department of Meteorology assured Mr Boustras’ team for its collaboration and support to the efforts made by the Center of Excellence regarding the development of effective fire prevention and response systems, fire extinguishing systems, as well as in the management of various environmental risks, by providing to them free access to various meteorological data maintained by the Department. In addition, the joint participation of the Meteorology Department and the CERIDES Center of Excellence in various actions related to education, research and the communication of the above topics to the general public, was also agreed.
